Special Edition Fall 2022: Editor's Letter
Well, readers, here we are! The longest semester of all time is coming to a close! I know that we at The Wheel aren’t the only ones who struggled at least a little bit with everything that this semester threw at us. Phew, it’s a relief that it’s almost done.
Allow us to introduce ourselves! We are Lauren Trowbridge (behind the keyboard here) and Natalie Nemes, and we’re the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor respectively of The Wheel. Like I said before, this semester has been a blur, and not only in the student world. Here at The Wheel, we’re in the process of launching both new positions and new ideas. More on that later. Let’s just say that we’ve been in and out of more meetings than classes.
One of the biggest changes that we’ve had to adjust to is the addition of formatting onto our plates as editors. For those who don’t know, our past print editions were formatted and designed in Adobe InDesign, and we’ve been lucky enough to have staff members in the past who’ve taken on the job and designed our editions for extra hours. However, this semester, we don’t have that luxury. The editors have been thrust into the position to format, and we’re excited to say that we did it! You’re holding what we did! How cool is that?!
We’ve been extremely lucky to receive an immense amount of support from a number of people regarding our formatting floundering. First, Professor Bethany Rahn from the Art Department was so gracious and worked with us in multiple workshops to help us learn the program. Huge thanks to Professor Rahn! Also, we would be nowhere without Lainey Mankowski, a past Staff Journalist of The Wheel. She did our formatting over the past two semesters and shared her former pages with us as a starting point. Thanks, Lainey!
On top of that, we as editors have been able to pass off more of our duties onto our wonderful staff. Morgan, one of our Staff Journalists, has taken over the Social Media Manager position with immense success.
Another huge and really exciting change is the addition of our wonderful Business Intern, Madeline! Having someone to help out with back-end budget, ad sales and management has been on our to-do list since I’ve been on staff (which is a long time!) and we’ve finally been able to hire someone. Madeline has been an invaluable asset to our team and we’re excited to continue working with her.
Speaking of positions, we’re so beyond excited to be continuing with our Intern positions. We introduced the position of the Editorial Intern at the beginning of 2021 and it’s continuing with gusto, opening up the experience of writing for a newspaper to more people. Dipping their toe into journalism, our Editorial Interns are able to take on less of a time commitment and learn as they go. We love our Interns! (And keep your eyes peeled for the possibility of a Design Intern in the near future.)
Focusing more on this edition, our theme is “Who Are You, and Who Am I?” Off the bat, you’ll notice that this opens up a lot of room for introspection, both within oneself and within society. Our wonderful writers took this in stride, and the articles you’ll read range from fun and bantery to reflective and contemplative. Our staff have soared with this theme, as we don’t feature editorials as much on our website. Opening up is hard. Thanks, writers. And finally, thank you to YOU! Our lovely readers! You’re the reason we do this. Without further ado, here’s our Fall 2022 Special Edition! Enjoy!
