St. Kate's welcomes new drama club

Five first-year students start Dew Drop Drama Co. and begin working on semester project

At the beginning of the semester, a new club was chartered: the Dew Drop Drama Co. (3DC). The club was formed by first-year students Madeline Maurer (Elementary Education. ‘25), the treasurer, and the board members Scout Weinandt (Elementary Education, ‘25), Aurora Long (Psychology, ‘25), Tessa Schoenecker (History and American Sign Language, ‘25), and Rachel Popko (Theatre, ‘25).

Although creating a new club may sound as easy as pitching a concept, the process is actually quite long. For the club to be official it needs to be chartered. Board member Weinandt said that the chartering process was a lot of paperwork and waiting. They had to write a club constitution which took time to revise and get perfect before the club could be chartered.

The mission of the club is to make theater accessible to everyone. Anyone can participate no matter their skill level, amount of experience, or level of comfortability.

“We want to create a community, where all these people that have not been in theater, especially because of the pandemic can have a chance to be a part of theater. So we want to offer that at St. Kate’s where theater has been lacking.” Board member Long said.

“A general long-term goal for us would be creating a creative community of people with similar interests,” Weinandt said.

A detailed outline of 3DC’s first project.

3DC is excitedly starting to work on its first project. Made up of works from Shakespeare, the cast constructed a “patchwork play”. The piece will look at “concepts surrounding women in leadership, justice, identity, and what makes a good life, particularly for women and people of other marginalized identities” according to the information handout.

Because Shakespeare can be tough to interpret, the crew is going to work together to decipher the meanings of the pieces prior to acting out the monologues, scenes, and sonnets.

Members of 3DC can be actors, stage managers, tech and crew, writers, costume designers, prop designers, scenic builders, or light and sound crew. Auditions are not being held for this play. Anyone can get involved as much as they would like. 3DC is welcoming thespians and theater lovers to be a part of the project. More information can be found on their Instagram @dewdropdramaco.
