Special Edition Fall 2023: Editor’s letter: Carving the pathway forward
By Natalie Nemes
Welcome to the end of another semester, St. Kate’s. Congratulations to everyone for making it through. It hasn’t been easy. Being students and finding ourselves in a tumultuous era makes our growing pains even more raw. We are searching and hopeful and afraid and angry, but most of all, we are undergoing a process of discovery.
As the world moves forward at a breakneck pace, there is an overwhelming need to control the tides, to repave the roads, to set our sails for better shores. While humanity continues to create and destroy and rebuild, we find ourselves in the midst of it all, wondering where we go from here and what we could possibly do to make a difference.
It is with this in mind that we’ve chosen “Reinventing the Wheel” as this edition’s theme. We live in a time of great change, and as a staff we have been questioning what that means. Is progress inherently a good thing? What happens when invention leads to regression? How do we change for the better? With topics ranging from late-stage capitalism to queer history, our reporters have written articles that seek answers to all these questions and more. We hope this theme resonates with you as deeply as it does with us.
To tackle subject matter this vast and difficult, thanks are in order to our staff, who made this all possible. First and foremost, I’d like to extend a round of applause to our amazing writers who worked tirelessly to bring this edition to fruition. You all are incredibly gifted, talented and hardworking, and this edition would not be possible without you.
I have to give a special shout-out to our design intern, Bella Lee, whose formatting skills are the reason why this print edition looks as beautiful as it does. Thank you also to our social media manager, M Yeager, who has worked tirelessly to bolster our presence on Instagram and Facebook this semester. Much gratitude as well to our business manager, Madeline Bjonskaas, who continues to do good work with The Wheel’s finances. And to my associate editor, Mia Timlin: Thanks for diving into this semester headfirst with me so we could do great journalism.
As a staff, we’ve worked harder than ever to write articles that answer questions readers are asking. We’ve had a greater emphasis on breaking news and event coverage this year so that we can act as a source of reliable and relevant knowledge for the St. Catherine community. I’m incredibly lucky and grateful to have such a wonderful team that’s dedicated to, as we like to say in the journalism world, seeking the truth and reporting it.
And finally, thank you, dear readers, for supporting our work. You are why we do what we do. Cheers to another semester and more great things to come.
