No Elimination, Just Education: Squid Game Olympics at St. Kate’s

On April 8, the Rauenhorst Ballroom buzzed with excitement as students gathered for the Squid Game Nutrition Olympics, a lively, interactive event hosted by the St. Kate’s Health & Wellness Clinic in partnership with Dining Services.

Yasmin Adam, Health Promotion Coordinator at St. Kate’s, led in organizing the event. “Our team is always thinking of creative ways to engage students in health education,” Adam explained. “During the event, students engaged in nutrition education through games inspired by the Netflix series Squid Game.”

While the Squid Game theme doesn’t hold a deeper meaning, it offered a fun and familiar twist that caught students’ attention. The real focus was on something every college student can relate to: figuring out meals and snacks that fit busy schedules and tight budgets.

“Nutrition is a big topic for college students,” Adam said. “We wanted to highlight affordable, easy meal prep and smart snacking.”

To do that, the event featured team-based challenges covering important nutrition topics, from building a balanced plate to choosing smart snacks and grocery shopping on a budget. Students worked in teams to earn points, with the top team winning $25 gift cards to both Trader Joe’s and Target, a big win for any student grocery run.

The event also included fun giveaways like grocery tote bags, fruit-shaped plushies and a popular popcorn bar, making the evening both educational and enjoyable.

Adam’s goal for the event was simple but meaningful: “For students to learn how to put together a balanced meal that is easy and quick to fit into their busy schedules.”

Her final message to students was full of encouragement: “We hope to see you there for a fun evening of games, a popcorn bar, and prizes!”

With a lively atmosphere, helpful nutrition tips and exciting prizes, the Squid Game Nutrition Olympics proved that learning about healthy habits doesn’t have to be boring, it can be fun, hands-on, and even a little competitive.
