Eighteen years of Citizen Katie
Everything you need to know about this event as it celebrates its eighteenth year on campus
At St. Catherine University, there is an annual day of service held in the fall semester: Citizen Katie. This event started off in 2004 as an opportunity for resident students to give back to the community, and has expanded to welcome all St. Kate’s students, current and former. Citizen Katie helps students, alumni, and staff to dedicate their time one sunny September morning to helping several various non-profit organizations both on and off campus. The event is hosted through various departments here at St Kate’s, such as Residence Life, Community Work and Learning, and the Student Center for Activities.
This year’s event took place on October 2nd, 2021, and had over 80 people participating in the day of service. The work done at Citizen Katie is both indoors and outdoors, all depending on the project. Some projects even take students off campus to work along these non-profits in the community. This year features several projects all done in person, which included building wardrobes for those who need their housing furnished with Bridging Inc., gardening at St. Paul Public Library in Highland Park, where volunteers here helped tend to the gardens, yard work and other miscellaneous projects at Sarah’s...an Oasis for Women, a mission founded by the CSJ’s aimed at assisting women who have faced struggles such as abuse, war, and other traumatic events.
This year, the over 80 students, staff, and alum who participated were split up and succeeded in their various projects. Though these projects all have different objectives, they will leave a lasting impact on those who benefit from them both now and in the future when Citizen Katie partners with these organizations again.
