Dew Drop Drama Company converts the Frey Theater into a Soccer Field for its performance of The Wolves
By Skylar Mattson
On Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5, Dew Drop Drama Company took the stage at the Frey Theater for its annual production.
The entirely student-run production team and crew performed The Wolves, written by Sarah DeLappe. The play follows a suburban high school girls’ soccer team through a series of team warm ups where big questions are navigated and competitive energy builds.
The show was directed by Dew Drop Drama Company founders and seniors Aurora Long and Tessa Schoenecker. Four years ago, as first-year students, this pair felt that theater was missing from the St. Kate’s environment, so they formed Dew Drop Drama Company to create opportunities for Katies to get involved with theater.
With a cast and crew of nearly 20 students, The Wolves showed that Long and Schoenecker have impacted students with their love of theater. The cast of nine soccer players and one soccer mom consisted of first year, junior and senior students.
This was not junior Gus Herzig’s first performance with the Dew Drop Drama Company, and her comfortability on the Frey Theater stage showed in her performance as the drama-stirring Number 13. A crowd favorite had to be Number 00 played by first year Claire Sommerhauser. Number 00 isn’t very talkative; she spends most of the show wandering about in her massive goalkeeper gloves and participating in her dreaded ritual of running to throw up right before her team takes the field prior to every game. Sophia Mazzolini consistently shocked the crowd in her role as the brutally honest and insensitive Number 7 because of the unexpected nature of the drama she could brew next year. First year Lily Doffing’s performance as Number 11 cannot go without mentioning. In her first performance with Dew Drop Drama Company, Doffing captured a complicated character who could be one of the most spirited on the team all while navigating many personal struggles before her unfortunate death in a car accident that almost breaks the team.
Production stage manager and club co-founder Madeline Mauer worked with assistant stage managers Megan Nyholm and Mary Gurka to keep the uniforms clean and the soccer balls from rolling off the stage. Their work behind the scenes was much appreciated by the crew and audience. Assistant Director Jennifer Slendak will have one more year with the club and is excited to see what is in store for her and the club in the fall.
The Wolves was the last performance that seniors Long and Schoenecker will be a part of. As the curtains closed on her time with the club, Long shared, “Working with such a talented group of actors and club members has been an honor. [Dew Drop Drama Company] would not exist without their continuous support and dedication to the club. Madeline, Tessa and I have worked tirelessly over the past 4 years to bring theater back to St. Kate’s campus, and we hope that our community continues to support the arts and [Dew Drop Drama Company] for years to come!”
