Bad Looking Thanksgiving Food
By Ilwad Salex
It’s November, and for many across the country, it’s the time of turkeys, fall (well, for us Minnesotans, it’s winter) and the beginning of the holiday season. When Thanksgiving arrives, so does a battle of the plates. Different families have different recipes, and they often hold competitions to determine which plates are the best. As the internet has grown and the world has become more connected, it’s easier to find all kinds of dishes that have been cooked up for Thanksgiving dinner—some of them the ugliest plates you’ve ever seen. Today, we’ll be looking at some of the grossest plates I was able to find.
After a long analysis of this first photo on the left, I was able to conclude it was some sort of mishmash of peas, shrimp, eggs and carrots. Does this look gross at first? Yes. Do I still feel as if it might actually taste good? With the right seasoning, yes. The second photo is also a cake shape, but I could not tell you what exactly it’s made out of. As I was doing my research, I noticed a growing trend that a lot of the ugliest dishes were in this cake shape. To me, in theory this is a good idea, even though it might not look the tastiest. I truly might try to do this with spaghetti, lime and meaty spaghetti sauce. Just maybe not this Thanksgiving.
Millie Osei ‘24 (Public Health and Data Science) rated these two meals an 8/10 on the rancid scale. “I wouldn’t eat this if my life depended on it, but the one with the shrimp has potential.”
This might be a controversial take, but I would one hundred percent try this. The reason why I say this is because I’ve always enjoyed mixing something sweet, like a fruit, with something salty, and whatever is mixed in with that strawberry appears to be of the savory variety. I think my only concern with this is how the liquid is going to taste—I would still try it though!
